Wat Pho is the school of medicine and traditional Thai massages of Bangkok. It depends on the temple Wat Pho (temple of the lying Buddha which is also the oldest temple of Bangkok). It preserves the stone plates where are buried characters with the reflex points and the zen lines, relics which are used for learning.
It was the monks who perpetuated the learning of massage long ago. Today, the temple of Wat Pho is still the best known massage school in Thailand. Traditional massage is part of the authentic Thai way of life: receiving massages has been part of everyday life for centuries, and Thais are aware of the importance of their body. They know that relaxing their muscles allows them not only to soothe their body but also their heart and spirit.

In 1661, Simon de Loubère, who was the French connection in the royal heart of Louis XIV wrote the first international document on Thai massage in his memoirs:
“When a person is ill, he begins by having his whole body massaged by a specialist who strengthens the sick person's body and rests his feet, elbows and his hands on his body...”

Arthur Lambert, director and founder of the Thai institute in the United States comments: “Thai massage assists the body in its internal desire to return to a state of optimal performance and health and contributes to a feeling of pleasure and well-being. You begin to feel the correctness of the concept of self, being and life.
